Advocacy
HB 2721 was dropped on February 4th, 2026! Please take a moment to view the bill’s language:
This is a significant step toward passing legislation in Washington State. We’ve worked hard over the past couple of years to educate legislators on our profession and how legislation will ensure the health, safety, and welfare of the public. We have found our House bill sponsors, Representative Mike Volz of District 6 on the east side of the state, and Representative Janice Zahn of District 41 on the west side of the state. We are so excited to work with these legislators on the future of Commercial Interior Design Legislation.
We anticipate a symbolic informational hearing of our bill in the 2026 session, where Commercial Interior Designers will provide testimony in support of our legislation.

Our advocacy efforts continue to gain strong momentum across Washington State. Our lobbyist, along with the IIDA NPC President and VP of Washington Advocacy, has now met with over 16 state legislators, including several senators. These meetings have been instrumental in introducing our bill and educating elected officials on the importance and impact of our proposed interior design legislation. Commercial Interior Design regulation at the state level helps establish and maintain professional standards that protect the health, safety and welfare of the general public. IIDA firmly believes that legal recognition, achieved through registration and certification, brings uniformity to the profession, defines responsibility of an interior designer, and encourages excellence in the commercial Interior Design industry.
“I’ve truly enjoyed getting to know the legislators we advocate for and helping them better understand who we are as commercial interior designers. After reviewing our bill and meeting with us, they have been thoughtful, receptive, and welcoming to the process of advancing our language. As Stacey Crumbaker aptly said, who would have thought that studying interior design in college would one day lead to speaking with legislators or helping shape bill language?” - Megan Onley, IIDA NPC - President
“Through our legislative efforts in Washington, I’ve had the opportunity to help educate state representatives on the importance of commercial interior design. Commercial interior designers help shape the public spaces people rely on every day, from places of care and learning to work and gathering. Advocacy matters to me because it helps ensure the spaces we design are supported by thoughtful laws that put safety, accessibility, and people first.”- Cecilia Arroyo, IIDA NPC - VP of Washington Advocacy
On January 4th, Representative Zahn hosted a community listening session at Bellevue College. An ASID Washington Chapter Advocacy Chair, Helen Torris, ASID, NCIDQ, attended alongside an IIDA NPC board member, Jordyn Aden, IIDA, NCIDQ, and spoke in support of commercial interior design legislation. The session was open to the public, and we are incredibly grateful for the passionate advocates who continue to lend their voices in support of our profession.
Additionally, this past fall our Advocacy Team participated in three town halls to raise awareness and educate the community about our proposed legislation. All presentations were led by Stacey Crumbaker, IIDA International President, and Megan Onley, IIDA NPC President. If you weren’t able to attend, we encourage you to check them out and stay engaged as we continue moving this effort forward together. Two of the three town halls were in partnership with the AIA Washington Council, where we covered our collaboration over the past year of 2025.

Over the past year, we have met monthly with AIA Washington Council and have collaboratively advanced our bill language to a fourth draft version, which is currently undergoing one final review in anticipation of the forthcoming ICOR Report. The Interorganizational Council on Regulation (ICOR) works to share best practices and advocate for the important role of licensing boards that regulate the professions of architecture, engineering, interior design, landscape architecture, and surveying. ICOR’s mission is to support sound regulation that protects the public’s health, safety, and welfare while facilitating licensure across professions.
The ICOR Practice Scope Overlap Report is expected to be released soon and will be available for review on ICOR’s website. Our IIDA NPC’s very own, Stacey Crumbaker, IIDA, NCIDQ, has been involved as the CIDQ professional member in helping craft this thorough report, and we thank her for breadth of knowledge. Over the past year, the Consortium for Interior Design - Washington has worked closely with an AIA Washington Council Task Force and mutually agreed to wait for the release of this report to ensure our bill aligns with established professional practice scopes prior to introducing the legislation this session.
We’re gathering member input to better understand perspectives on commercial interior design regulation and advocacy engagement. Your feedback will help shape state-level advocacy, clarify member priorities like public health and safety or professional recognition, and strengthen our network for future legislative opportunities!
